Can laser stripping damage an optical fibre?

It can if an unsuitable laser or incorrect processing parameters are used. Fiber optic processing requires control of wavelength, laser energy, focus, dwell time and material presentation. The process should be developed to remove the required coating while remaining within a suitable process window for the underlying fiber.

Can you laser strip polyimide-coated optical fibers?

Polyimide-coated fibers can be suitable for UV laser processing. The exact fiber construction, coating thickness and required strip geometry should be evaluated before selecting the process.

Can fiber ribbons be laser stripped?

Yes, certain fiber ribbon constructions can be laser processed. However, the matrix material is critical. Different ribbon materials can respond very differently to the same laser wavelength.

Can several fibers be processed at the same time?

Potentially. Appropriate fixturing can allow several fibers or a fiber ribbon to be presented within the processing area, creating opportunities to reduce net processing time.

How do you know whether a laser-stripped fibre is acceptable?

Visual inspection is only one part of the assessment. Depending on the application, additional dimensional, optical, tensile, proof-strength or downstream performance testing may be required.

Can laser processing remove an outer fiber optic cable jacket?

Yes, depending on the construction. In applications where the outer jacket and internal insulation are similar materials, a controlled laser score followed by mechanical jacket removal may be preferable to cutting completely through the jacket.
