15 Years of Laser Wire Solutions

Laser Wire Solutions is celebrating 15 years of developing laser processing solutions for some of the world’s most demanding manufacturing applications.

Founded in 2011, the business began with a simple idea that still shapes the way we work today: rather than developing a product and then looking for a problem it can solve, start with the customer’s application and build the right solution around it.

That thinking came from founder Dr Paul Taylor’s experience working with laser technology and, crucially, seeing a different approach to product development: understanding what a customer actually needed first, then engineering the solution around that requirement.

Fifteen years later, that application-led approach remains at the heart of Laser Wire Solutions.

From an idea to the first machine

The early days of Laser Wire Solutions were modest. Paul’s first office was a small room off his bedroom, before the business moved into its first dedicated start-up unit in Abertillery in 2012.

That first system became Gemini 1 for a customer based in France.

It set a pattern that has continued throughout the company’s history: customers bring us difficult applications, and our job is to understand the process, test what is possible and develop a solution that works.

Fifteen years of change

A lot has changed since 2011.

Laser Wire Solutions has grown from a small start-up into an international laser technology business, supporting customers across medical devices, aerospace, automotive, data and other advanced manufacturing industries.

Our capabilities have also expanded far beyond the early systems. Today, Laser Wire Solutions works across a broad range of laser processes including wire and cable stripping, ablation, cutting, drilling, welding, micromachining and precision medical-device component processing.

The technologies have changed. The applications have become more complex. The industries we support have broadened.

But the process behind them remains remarkably familiar.

We still start with the application.

We still ask questions.

We still test, refine and problem-solve.

And we still work closely with customers to understand difficult manufacturing challenges and find the right way to solve them.

More than machines

The last 15 years are also about the people who have been part of the journey.

When reflecting on some of the moments he is most proud of, Paul doesn’t immediately point to an award or a particular machine. He recalls looking around at a company Christmas party and realising how many people had become part of Laser Wire Solutions — and being reminded that he had helped bring that group together.

That team has continued to grow, bringing together engineering, applications, manufacturing, service, commercial and operational expertise.

Our customers, partners and suppliers have been just as important. Many of the technologies and capabilities we have developed began with somebody bringing us a new requirement, material or manufacturing problem and asking whether there might be a better way to do it.

Looking to the next 15 years

The anniversary is an opportunity to look back, but Laser Wire Solutions has never been a business particularly interested in standing still.

Paul describes change simply:

“Change is the only constant.”

And the next chapter is already taking shape.

From increasingly automated manufacturing processes to new laser technologies and more complex medical-device applications, the challenges facing manufacturers continue to evolve — and so will the solutions required to address them.

As Laser Wire Solutions celebrates 15 years, we would like to thank our customers, partners, suppliers, past and present team members, and everyone who has played a part in the journey so far.

Here’s to the next chapter.
